aToMik Green began in early 2008 and is the second business venture of mates Mike Samuel and Tom Jepson. Their successful aToMik Corporation was born in 2003, and a few years later both Tom and Mike wanted build a new business centred around the environment. Based in Melbourne, aToMik Green has rapidly grown in reputation since launch and now features over 3000 products and dozens of research articles. 2008 saw this success recognised with the aToMik Green website winning the NEWS.com.au 2008 Green Award in the Environment 2.0 category. aToMik Green was also featured in Dynamic Business Magazine's feature for the Standout Businesses of 2008. More recently, in 2010, aToMik Green won the Australian Retailers Association Independent Retailer of The Year for Victoria and was a Finalist for the National Award.

Why 'aToMik'?

Anyone with an environmental conscience would steer clear of anything atomic or nuclear, so why name a green business after such an association? And whats with all that whacky capitalisation? A cunning misnomer, aToMik is simply a culmination of the owners names, Tom and Mike (with capitals), and has absolutely nothing to do with devestating weapons or the like.

What we do like about atoms, however, is that there is such a lot of energy stored in such a small thing. We like to use that as inspiration that even little us still have the potential power and energy to drive a change for the better in the world.

aToMik Green's Goals and Focus

aToMik Green is more than a shop front for environmental products. The company's focus and goals can be split into two categories.

1) Open Source Environment

Under the general heading of Open Source Environment, aToMik Green’s website is designed to allow participation and conversation on environmental issues. The Research section is dubbed a 'green Wiki', and informs people about all things environmental without bias or being aggressive. In fact, it aims to convey the information in a light hearted and accessible manner. The section is designed to cover anything and everything you may want to know about the ever tightening green environmental screw - from what the numbers in the triangle on Coke bottles really means, to what rebates your local governments can offer. If you're after the answer, aToMik Green is where you can go for a one-stop, no-nonsense resource.

2) Green Shop

The Green Shop's aim is to provide consumers with genuine, price competitive and environmentally sound products. aToMik's range of environmental products, including LED lighting, is stringently tested for authenticity of the products claims – both environmental and financial, as well as ensuring the product is price competitive with existing products. Our core range of products are tested against the maxim of “saving money, saving the environment”. We also stock a range of ethically produced fair trade products and source as many products as possible from local manufacturers and artists.

aToMik Green's Environmental Policy

aToMik Green is not only committed to maintaining minimal physical impact upon the environment, but also to actively seek out more diverse ways of ensuring that our impact does not increase. It is our goal to create and sustain an environmentally conscious work place for all those who work for aToMik Green, achieved through policy and procedure implementation, education and desire to make a difference.

To this end, our office and retail store is powered by 100% Wind Power provided by Momentum Energy. All our products have their carbon impact evaluated based on weight, manufacture and transportation costs, and then offset through carbon offset programs provided by Greenfleet. All vehicle and transportation requirements are also offset, and our website is hosted by Ilisys who power their entire operation with 100% Greenpower, and offset their entire business.
